How does someone go from living a perfectly comfortable, ordinary life in the city to moving abroad to live an alternative lifestyle off-grid, grow their own produce, raise animals and live their dream life?
It’s a bit crazy to give all that up, right? But it’s a good kind of crazy.
I’m Sandrine, and this is WHY I became one of the co-founders of the Farmish Collective: I realised my dream of moving from Amsterdam to an olive & almond farm in the middle of nowhere… and I’m now on a mission to help others make their dreams their everyday life as well.
When you feel like you already have a nice, stable life set up with a normal job and home, it can be difficult to step out of your comfort zone and leap into the unknown. Even if making that leap would mean you could live the life you’ve always wanted to live. It can be scary.
It is true that it can be challenging... but it’s not impossible.
You might get caught up in thinking about all the difficulties you may run into, the challenges that you’ll have to overcome, and everything that could go wrong to send you running back to your old life. Big life changes can be very daunting, especially if they involve starting from scratch and putting a lot of effort into something that may or may not work out.
Many of us choose not to risk losing what we already have, even if that means giving up on what we really want. That’s why a common choice for most people is to procrastinate and put their ideal life on the back burner for “later.”
But living your dream doesn’t have to wait until you’re retired.
Yes, shaking up your life to move off-grid can, and certainly will pose obstacles. It’s not something that just happens overnight, and it’s not a decision you should make lightly. You will have to be patient and committed, because things go wrong off-grid just like they do in the city.
But at the end of the day, isn’t it better to give your dream a chance, rather than looking back and asking yourself “what if…?”
From someone who’s actually been there and done it, there are a few super important things that really do matter, and that you should prepare yourself for if you’re thinking of relocating to live an alternative life.
These include some of the challenges that moving throws at you and how we handled them and crafted our off-grid life in Spain.
