6 Reasons to Start a Business while a Stay at Home Mum (SAHM)

You're knee-deep in daily life as a stay at home mum - diaper changes, grocery shopping, and oh so much laundry! (Seriously, how do those little humans end up dirtying so much laundry?!?!) And you're thinking of starting a business on top of all of that. Why would you want to add one more thing onto the already long list of things you do every day?

There are lots of reasons to want to start a business. Many of them have to do with money. Let's face it, money makes the world go round and helps keep a roof over our little ones' heads. Wanting to add to your family's income is a great reason for wanting to become a work at home mom. But it shouldn't be your only reason.

Over fifty percent of businesses fail in the first five years. You know why? Starting a business is hard work! If making money is your only reason, you'll be so tempted to give up when things get tough. Let's dig deep for some other reasons to become a WAHM.

1. Develop New Relationships

Being a SAHM can be so lonely sometimes! Have you ever longed to have a grown-up conversation for a change? Running your own business is a great way to build relationships and get some time with other adults .

Not only do you develop relationships with clients or customers, but also you can get to know other business owners. You'll meet other stay at home moms who have businesses in similar niches. You can collaborate together on projects and encourage each other as you grow your companies!

2. Value yourself and gain confidence

Spending time with your kids is amazing of course but do you ever wonder if you could do more? Before kids you may have had a great job where you could succeed and grow, taking pride in your professional accomplishments. It’s natural to feel like that part of your life is missing once other priorities take over. Starting a business as a stay at home mum could reignite those parts of your life that you’ve been lacking and give you a big confidence boost.

3. Learn New Skills

No matter what type of business you start, you'll definitely have to learn new skills to run it successfully. From bookkeeping to social media marketing , there's so much that goes on behind the scenes of every small company.

Learning new things is a great way to build up your confidence in yourself. Get out of the mom rut that you've been in and find out what else you're capable of doing! The best part is being more confident in yourself is it will teach your kids to have more confidence in themselves, too!

4. Make Time for Your Passion

Have you ever felt like you put your own interests on the back burner because you're a mom? If you make a company from your passion , then you'll be sure to make time to do what you love. It’ll be like having self-care time that makes you money!

Passions come in all different shapes and sizes. Some moms love to do crafts or bake. Others get excited about being able to organize or write. And some other moms just love being able to help others. No matter what gets you excited about life, you can find a way to make it a business.

5. Teach Your Kids

The biggest reason I started a business is because I've spent my whole life watching my dad run his business. (I'm actually a 4th generation entrepreneur- crazy, right?) How you live your life every day teaches your kids what's possible in their own lives.

If you want to teach your kids to work hard, think for themselves, and take pride in their work, then let them help with your business.

Find small ways that they can contribute on a regular basis. They'll pick up important life skills, and you'll gain some extra help!

  • Some ideas for getting kids of all ages involved include:

  • Packing and unpacking boxes

  • Being in pictures you have taken for promotions

  • Becoming your ambassadors by telling others about your business

  • Talking with them about what you're working on instead of just telling them you're working

6. Contribute to Family Finances

This is about more than just making money to add to your bank account. It's also about being able to help take some of the burden off of your husband or partner. Being a single income family in today's world can be stressful!

How would things be different for your family if you made even just a few hundred dollars a month? You don't need to work 40 hours a week from home and build an empire in order to make a difference. Having a side business where you work a few hours a week is all that it takes!
